I have no idea why it's a tri-fold but I am guessing that it's to balance it as a sort of saddle over your lap so it doesn't slide off or maybe for easier access to inside pockets. I didn't want the bulk of other bags or messenger totes and this is perfect. The pockets allow me to fit in my camera adaptor and USB cable. I also fit my small pocket Canon SD1200 and still maintain the sleek form factor.
