Great price for motherboard (MB). Replaced a HP Pavilion Model a6838f Product NC839AA motherboard with Biostar G41-M7. Memory and CPU fit from old system, this is a MATX and is smaller than the original, but fit the case fine and the backplate fit too. This MB did not have a 1394 port or modem. The arrangement of the sata plugs on mb were different from original, thus the short cables would not reach sata-port1, so used sata-port3 (no big deal there). The pin configuration for the power-header cable between the case and new MB had to be changed so the power on switch, hdd light and power light would work. A small pin made removal of the wires from the header easy, then it was just a matter of matching up the wires to the new mb. Pin specifications were not well documented for old MB but if you look very closely at the printing on old MB and some web diagrams it will work. If the LED's don't work you may have the pins configured backwards. All the other cables attached without problems once they were correctly identified. Motherboard powered up perfectly and works great. I did enter the bios and changes some boot device order to my likings.
HP in their infinate wisedom with Vista has a tatoo file (ie if you change the MB or hard drive you get a code purple on boot) There is a hidden directory C:/HP (read the code purple log.. it will tell you what pgm it is trying to run) .. I just deleted that program c:\HP\bin\precmdline.cmd because all it does it check what hardware the machine has against a file..and if it doesn't match it STOPS with a code purple. They use a if exits then run logic so if you delete it won't run it.. ta da worked fine. BTW the original HP system was purchased 14 months ago as a spare and never used, plugged it in and within an hour it died, hp wanted $300 for a new MB and 220 for refurb. right!! you can buy a whole system for that. This biostar for $40.00 delivered works fine. Once vista loads use the driver disk with the biostar mb to install their drivers, this process was flawless. I used this MB as it was close to the same driver set as the original mb in chipset performance ie g39 vs g41.. The usb mouse seemed to be lit even with the system powered off.. I just removed the usb to ps2 adapter and plugged it into the PS2 port, that solved that. I would suspect that they are trying to keep the usb mouse and/or keyboard powered for instant on useage (there are some usb power on jumpers and bios configurations too) using the ps2 port made this a moot point. I would recommend this mb.
