(More customer reviews)I'm upgrading from a GTX 260, which was a very good card. I never buy top of the line, so I knew a GTX 480 was out of the question. I always crunch the numbers on price / performance / power requirements / heat generation, and this card hits the sweet spot.
It's SMALLER than my GTX260, yet outperforms the larger card -- if only slightly, and manages to generate less heat in the process. Heat is the enemy in the quest for ever-higher anti-aliased framerates!
I can run Fallout3 fully maxed out with no lag whereas the GTX260 would hiccup with everything maxed on 1920 *1200. Dragon Age looks absolutely gorgeous on the 460 -- everything maxed @ 1920 * 1200, whereas I had to tweak my settings to get an acceptable framerate on the 260.
If it were only to get slightly better performance in now-year-old games, however, I doubt I would have made the purchase. What I really find appealing about the 460, and 4xx series in general is the ability to stream HD Audio from an HDMI cable.
Since my PC also doubles as my Home Theater, I can now watch blu-rays with full TrueHD / DTS-MA audio. Sweet!
Ultimately, it was the combination of improved performance, improved efficiency, and the inclusion of HD Audio which made upgrade to this card.
I'm more of a casual gamer, preferring to play games when they reach the year-old mark, so that I can get them for half-off, and I don't need the latest and greatest $500+ video card to play them. I imagine that the hardcore gamers would gravitate towards the GTX 480.
